VoxAI to MagicaVoxel
Export your AI-generated voxel models to MagicaVoxel for professional editing, stunning renders, and animation.
📚 In This Guide
What is MagicaVoxel?
MagicaVoxel is a free, lightweight voxel editor and path-traced renderer. It's beloved by artists for creating stunning voxel art and renders.
🎨 Voxel Editing
Paint, sculpt, and modify voxels with intuitive tools.
✨ Path-Traced Rendering
Create photorealistic renders with global illumination.
🎬 Animation
Create frame-by-frame animations and turntables.
📦 Export Options
Export to OBJ, PLY, GLTF, and more from MagicaVoxel.
💡 Why VoxAI + MagicaVoxel?
Combine the speed of AI generation with the precision of manual editing:
- ✓Fast prototyping: Generate base models instantly with VoxAI
- ✓Precision editing: Fine-tune details in MagicaVoxel
- ✓Professional renders: Use MagicaVoxel's path tracer for portfolio-quality images
Step 1: Export from VoxAI
Open View Voxel
Navigate to your model in VoxAI's View Voxel section.
Click Download
Find the download options for your model.
Select .vox Format
This is MagicaVoxel's native format, preserving all voxel data and colors.
Step 2: Import to MagicaVoxel
Open MagicaVoxel
Launch MagicaVoxel. Download from ephtracy.github.io if you haven't.
Open the .vox File
Either drag & drop the .vox file into MagicaVoxel, or use File → Open to browse to your file.
Your Model is Ready!
The model loads with all voxels and colors intact. You can now edit, render, or export.
Recommended Workflow
🎯 Rapid Prototyping
- 1. Generate multiple concepts in VoxAI quickly
- 2. Export promising ones to .vox
- 3. Refine your favorite in MagicaVoxel
✨ Portfolio Rendering
- 1. Create models in VoxAI
- 2. Export to .vox at maximum detail (0.015 cube size)
- 3. Use MagicaVoxel's path tracer for stunning renders
🎬 Animation Prep
- 1. Generate base character/object in VoxAI
- 2. Import to MagicaVoxel
- 3. Create keyframes by duplicating and modifying
MagicaVoxel Tips
🎨 Color Palette
VoxAI models import with their own palette. You can adjust colors using MagicaVoxel's palette editor or remap to a custom palette.
📷 Render Settings
For best renders: Use "Render" mode, experiment with different lighting (sky, sun, area lights), and try glass/metal materials for dramatic effects.
💾 Save Versions
Keep your original VoxAI export and save MagicaVoxel edits as new files. This lets you restart from the AI base if needed.
Exporting from MagicaVoxel
After editing in MagicaVoxel, you can export to various formats:
| Format | Best For |
|---|---|
.obj | Blender, Maya, 3D printing |
.gltf/.glb | Game engines, web |
.png | Rendered images |
.vox | Continue editing later |
